Accidents happen. They are unexpected and usually, so much is happening at one time that it’s hard to know what to do first and who to call…is it the insurance company? Is it the police? Do I pull my car off the road? What about the other driver? There are definitely things that a driver can do to lessen the occurrence of an accident, but knowing how to handle an accident before it happens can make everything after the accident much easier.
1. Check All Passengers are Safe
Check on the safety of yourself and any passengers. If you or anyone else are seriously injured, try not to move, and call emergency services immediately.
2. Move Your Car to Safety
If the car is in a place where it might be hazard to others on the road, and it is drivable, move your car safely to the side of the road. If not, leave your car where it is and move yourself and fellow passengers to safety.
3. Alert Those Around You
If you have not done so already, turn off the car and turn on your emergency lights or use road flairs to let other drivers on the road navigate around the accident.
4. Call 911
No matter the extent of the damage to either vehicle, it’s imperative that the police are called and can document the scene. When you file a claim with your insurance company, they may ask for a copy of the police report for the claims process.
5. Exchange Insurance Information
After you’ve checked on the well-being of the other drivers and called the police for assistance, it’s time to exchange information with the other driver(s) of the accident while waiting for help to arrive. Here are the important details to make sure that you record:
• Full name of the other driver
• Contact Information (phone, email)
• Name of Insurance Company and their Policy Number
• Driver’s License Number and License Plate Number
• Make and Model of the other vehicles involved
• Location of the Accident
It’s also a good idea to use your camera on your phone and take photos that might help the adjuster from the insurance company reviewing your case. This is not a time to discuss fault with the other driver or who is financially responsible for what, just collect the important information and the insurance adjuster will determine fault later after reviewing the available information.
You may also want to talk to any witnesses that may have seen the accident. Be sure to write down their names and contact information as well.
6. Get Police Details
Once the officers arrive, make sure that you document the officers’ names and badge numbers. After they have collected all the information, make sure that you obtain a copy of their official report.
7. Contact Your Insurance Provider
At this time, you may want to call your insurance company or report the accident utilizing your insurance company’s mobile app. If your car is not in drivable condition, your insurance company can help arrange a tow to a reputable body shop and begin the process of getting you back on the road.
